It's clear that the ability to make stem cells has already led to significant advances. We're not quite ready to use them therapeutically but a lot of good work has been done by many groups using stem cells to understand the biology of disease, including multiple groups that have used stem cells to study Marfan syndrome, in particular.

Here again cells are taken from the patient. You make pluripotent stem cells. You then can differentiate these stem cells into a cell type of interest outside of the body. You can grow them up in large numbers, and then use those cells to identify abnormal cellular behaviors that are unique to people with Marfan syndrome and also ways to explore ways to correct those behaviors.
その方法ですが、まず、マルファン症候群の患者さんから細胞を取り出し、その細胞からiPS細胞を作成します。その後、作ったiPS細胞を体外で研究対象の細胞種へと分化させます。その細胞を培養して数を増やし、その細胞を使って、マルファン症候群の患者さんに特有な、細胞の異常を特定したり、こうした異常を修正するための方法を見つけ出します。
So this is a one aspect of this talk. That's already ready for prime time. This is being used today by numerous groups to study Marfan syndrome and related conditions.
