Personal Perspectives Panel: Physical Activity & Exercise

47:43-51:18

Morgan, can you just build on that? You know, do you, what does your son do in PE class and do you feel like he's getting enough exercise outside of school and maybe talk about that a little bit?

Yeah, I mean, I, I was same as Dr. Shepard, like I didn't want to take him completely out of PE. I wanted him to participate not only for the fact of, "let's get the 45 minutes in," which, yeah, I could do that at home after school but I also wanted him to feel like a normal kid.

I think that's the biggest thing that the kids start to feel that "I'm not like everybody else, I can't do this," and at least if you're in the room and you're participating in parts of it it's, you know, the feeling of normality is there.

He doesn't participate in the isometric exercises so every day in gym they do push-ups, burpees, sit-ups, you know, those ones he's not a part of. He does jumping jacks while they do it but he does run the mile not as fast. He's, you know, one of the slower ones but he jogs the mile.

They play a slew of sports and when it's the rugby day they actually put him at the very back and so he still looks like he's participating. To everybody else does he actually get involved in it not really but that's one day every three weeks so it's just about being there and being a part of it too that is really important especially with young kids. Nobody wants to feel like the person that's not included or and it's notice, kids notice that you're not in gym class.

And outside of school, I mean, I would say golf is like very intense. He's not exactly exerting a lot of energy doing that but we have found to like ride our bikes around the neighborhood and we find new paths to go on. It's actually like become more bonding. He likes to shoot a basketball, there's, I mean, you know, like I said leisurely. He's found a lot of friends that like to shoot basketballs, too.

And they may not play on the basketball team for other reasons. It might be that they have asthma or they just don't want to. They, you know, they have a another thing that really interests them like the tuba and so they, they commit their time to that but, you know, there's kids along the street that none of them are on the basketball team but they all shoot baskets in the cul-de-sac, that he can at least be a part of that.

And I'd say the majority of people forget that he has a connective tissue disorder because we try to involve him in any way that he can be within a safe realm knowing that he knows his restrictions, too.

It's, I think, that's my big thing with him, especially young age and growing up with it is he needs to advocate for himself, "I'm not in gym class, I never will be." If he can't tell the teacher, "I can't do this," then we already have a problem.

So I'm really big on him knowing his limitations already and not telling him no. He needs to, you know, make safe decisions on his own,  which is a lot to ask of the 12-year-old but, you know, you, you have to start somewhere.
