If MRA is the main method of imaging, how, how often should contrast be used?

How often, that's a very good question. It depends on the kind of person I'm scanning. If it's a young patient and the first time around I used contrast imaging and repeat imaging, young in the sense that, you know, less than 40, repeat imaging is with non-contrast. If, if it's somebody above 40, the, the repeat imaging could be contrast. I think it's okay.

The amount of contrast we are using is very less too nowadays and there is some question of MRI contrast. This is another thing to remember, it does not affect your kidney function. MRI, CT contrast can affect your kidney function if you already have some kidney problems. MRI contrast in the presence of kidney function was thought to cause what we call a thing called NSF. It stands for nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, skin disorder that can happen from gadolinium is the contrast we use because of deposition but the more we learn about it we're finding that's not there is decreased risk than what we usually thought, so we are able to use that contrast even with patients with kidney dysfunction now, so the contrast scanning I would say even in my patients who are young I would repeat it every three to four years and older patients more frequently directly with contrast.
