That is a great question. It does to a certain degree although not everybody gets degeneration. Everybody's connective tissues are different and some are more prone to degeneration than others, though not knowing who's going to degenerate and not we try to fuse as little as possible and try to avoid stressing the unfused parts too much but in general that is a risk for it and it can be dealt with later if it happens by either physical therapy, extending the fusion or doing spinal cord stimulation or some such maneuver.
