So we, as we've talked about we were, we and other groups are trying to understand what medications might be good for someone with a vascular connective tissue disorder. A different question that I think can be equally important is what medications or other interventions should be avoided in someone with a vascular connective tissue disorder.

A number of years ago again using mouse models of Marfan syndrome we showed that treatment with a class of blood pressure medications called CCBs or calcium channel blockers unexpectedly led to very rapid growth of the proximal portions of the aorta and early tear of the aorta.

In collaboration with a group of investigators that had formed a registry called GenTAC we asked if there was any suggestion that medications in this calcium channel blocker group also imposed risk in people with Marfan syndrome and the answer was yes, that, that there was clear evidence that people in this registry that were taking calcium channel blockers showed a higher risk of either aortic dissection or the need for aortic surgery during the follow-up period.

We also began to investigate whether this might extend to other vascular connective tissue disorders and again the answer was yes that even in people without Marfan syndrome we were seeing the suggestion of a greater risk of aortic dissection or aortic surgery in people taking calcium channel blockers.
