In fact, perhaps as many as a third of children with Marfan syndrome are born with neither parent affected. Right?

So, how did this happen?

It turns out mutations happen all the time in eggs and sperm as they're developing. And it's just by chance that these mutations might affect the fibrillin gene.

And knowing that mutation has occurred can cause guilt on the part of the parents.

And typically their chances of having another child with Marfan syndrome would be close to zero because this was a one-time event in one sperm or for one egg.

So, the genetic counseling aspect of it is pretty straightforward but dealing with the psychological aspects can be quite troubling.
