Now many of you probably know that the blood vessels in Loeys-Dietz syndrome can be windy, something that we call tortuous. As you can see in the pictures on the right, some of these blood vessels make loops as they're going to their destination. This is particularly common in the blood vessels in the neck, but can be seen in other blood vessels throughout the body.

When we first saw this, we worried that windy or tortuous blood vessels might be dangerous that they might be prone to kink and to prevent blood flow from reaching the tissues, but we've simply learned over the last 15 years or so that this is not the case, that windy blood vessels help us make the diagnosis of Loeys-Dietz syndrome, but in general, it's not a condition to worry about.
