So the next very crucial role for many genetic counselors is the interpretation and disclosure of genetic testing results.

And before we dive into this, I just wanted to talk about the three different possible results that we typically get back from the genetic testing that we order.

So the first positive result is a mutation or a spelling error that has been identified in one of the genes. You'll also hear this called, the term pathogenic variant and that's synonymous with saying mutation.

The other possible result is a negative result, meaning that all of the genes were normal, so they're all spelled correctly.

And the third possible result is called a variant of uncertain significance, which we frequently call VUS for short and this result means that the patient has had a unique spelling change found in their gene but the testing laboratory doesn't currently have enough scientific evidence or information about that variant to determine whether it should be classified as positive or negative. Put another way, we don't really know if the variant is a mutation that causes the disease or whether it's actually a benign spelling change.

So everyone has variants in their genes. It's exactly what makes each of us unique. The important part is trying to distinguish whether or not a certain variant is causing disease.
