Now I, I realize there are a lot of people in the audience that are medically sophisticated. You learn a lot about heart problems over the over the years but never hurts to stop, to start at the beginning.

And, and here are just some basic pictures of, of the heart. I can tell you the pictures the colors are not quite so vivid in life but the heart actually does look like this and by the way, I know they taught you in in grade school that the heart was the size of your fist but that's not true. It's actually about the size of two fists and if you've got heart trouble, it can even be bigger than that but this is what the heart looks like.

It's a muscle, it's a pump. it pumps blood out to the body through this blood vessel, the aorta, which turns around in the upper part of the chest and goes down in the back and the heart is actually two pumps that sit side by side.
心臓は筋肉でできたポンプであり、押し出された血液は大動脈を通って全身に送られます。大動脈は胸の上部で背中側に回ります。心臓にある2つのポンプ部分は隣合っています。
The right side over here, your right side, receives blood from the body, pumps it out to the lungs. The blood gets oxygen there comes back to the left side and the left side pumps it out to the body.
心臓の右側は全身からの血液を受け取り、肺へと送ります。肺で酸素を取り込んだ血液は心臓の左側へと入り、そこから全身に送られます。
If you could take the front wall of the heart off and look inside there are those two pumping chambers. They're called ventricles, the one on the right pumps the dark blood to the lungs to get oxygen blood, comes back to the left. Left pumps it out to the body.

Each one of those pumps has two valves with it. An inlet valve and an outlet valve, the tricuspid and the pulmonary on the right side and on the left side the inlet valve, the, the valve it opens to let blood enter the left ventricle is called the mitral valve. There's an aortic valve it's not shown very well here. It's behind this area but those are the two valves on the left side mitral and aortic.

If, if some of you are history buffs like I am, you might be interested to know that the reason it's called the mitral valve. It's because when the Italian anatomists many centuries ago were doing the first autopsies and trying to figure out how the inner workings of the, of the body how they looked and how they worked. When they took out the mitral valve and kind of put it on a table and looked at it, it reminded them of the the bishop's miter, the hat, that the bishop of the catholic church would wear. Now this here it is upside down but you can imagine if the mitral valve were, were removed and then laid out on a table you'd have this round hat with things going up and it, it, they called it the miter valve and then it was later anglicized to mitral valve.

By the way the mitral is the only valve on the heart that has only two flaps. We call them leaflets. All the other valves normally have three flaps but this one has only two that open and close.
