Just a quick cartoon here to show how blood passes through the right side of the heart. It's dark red. It's not really blue but it's dark and it gets pumped out to the lungs to get oxygen comes back to the left and the left pumps it out to the body.

Now the purpose of the mitral valve is to let blood enter the left ventricle but maybe even more importantly to close and prevent blood from going backwards towards the lungs. In essence it makes sure that all the work of the heart is devoted to pumping the blood forward and not letting it go backwards and protecting the lungs because the lungs are very sensitive to backwash and regurgitation. It makes you feel winded and tired and over time can damage the the muscle of the heart, too.
