The aorta is the largest vessel in the body. It accepts blood from the heart and distributes it to the rest of the body. On the left side is the normal aorta. It's spinning because this is a CT scan where we've taken everything away and just took a picture of the aorta and the aortic root is right down here so the heart is digitally subtracted. All you see is the aortic root. There's the aortic valve and these little mustache looking things are called the coronary arteries. These are considerations that the surgeons have to make when they do aortic root surgery.

This panel here is fairly typical of an aortic root aneurysm that Marfan patients get so the entire root is too big and it tapers down to normal size aorta distally so this is normal anatomy here and Marfan anatomy to the right if you have an aortic root aneurysm.

The aortic valve can be affected also by the aortic aneurysm so the aortic valve is a one-way valve that makes sure that the blood travels in one direction only so as the heart beats blood will go through the aortic valve to the rest of the body and will not allow the blood to come backwards into the heart. Sometimes when the aortic aneurysm gets too large it stretches out the aortic valves those leaflets that you see don't come back together and valve is allowed to leak backwards in the heart. These can this condition can cause symptoms. We call it aortic regurgitation or aortic insufficiency and if left alone too long can cause heart failure.
