You can look at the Marfan clinic directory. Those are all institutions that have expertise in Marfan, Loeys-Dietz and vEDS. If you don't see one near you you can go to Marfan.org. ask and Jan at The Help Center can see if she has any recommendations for somewhere that's close to you and in general university-affiliated hospitals are a good bet because they do a lot of research.

And why is it important because our tissue is not like typical tissue and so you want to have somebody who has experienced like Dr. DeAnda said it can be like stitching together wet tissue paper, so you want someone who's done this before and he's seen the variety of complications that could happen afterwards and has experience handling those, so you want to ask surgeons how often they've done the surgery, how often they've operated on somebody with a connective tissue disorder before, that way you'll have the best chance for the best outcomes.

I know like personally recently I had coronary artery dissection and ended up at a local hospital where I got good care but they hadn't seen many dissections like mine and so the information that I got about follow-up was not the same as when I was able to talk with some expert after I got home and get information on the latest research and on just other information about what I should be doing to stay healthy.

There are some barriers which I think we need to recognize, distance can be a barrier and so can finances. I think that it's worth it to reach out to hospitals that you're interested in doing surgery with and talk to their social workers see if there's anything that can be worked out, maybe they're able to help you negotiate with your insurance company for coverage. Maybe there are options to help with the finances certainly if you're looking for surgery for a child. There's like Donald McDonald house to help stay at to cut down on costs and things like that, so you won't know until you ask those questions but it's worth it to ask the questions.
