Q:
This question is about planning an endoscopy and a colonoscopy. If you see evidence of IBD on an endoscopy alone, would you see that or do you need a colonoscopy to take a look at that?
A:
So, the two types of inflammatory bowel disease, one is called ulcerative colitis, the other is called Crohn's disease. Ulcerative colitis only affects the large intestines, so that would only be seen on a colonoscopy. Crohn's disease can affect any part of the intestinal tract. It can affect from the esophagus to the stomach to the small intestines to the large intestines or colon.
So you can see evidence of Crohn's disease on an upper endoscopy only. However, it is much more common to see evidence of Crohn's disease on a colonoscopy. And so if I were considering whether or not someone had Crohn's disease, I would schedule them for an endoscopy and a colonoscopy, which you can do typically during the same anesthesia.
