COVID-19 Update for the Marfan, Loeys-Dietz, and VEDS Community
24:22-25:28
This is actually an important topic that came up in one of my patients recently, who was a young person with Marfan syndrome, who was preparing to have an aortic operation and had COVID-19 in the past several months and the question was,"Well if I'm, if I'm being considered for elective operation whether it's on my heart or elsewhere, what is the risk if I've had COVID-19?"
And this is a huge study out of China that looked at this question. I believe tens of thousands of individuals and it suggested that if you wait seven weeks after your COVID-19 infection that the risk of the non-cardiac operation or the vascular operation goes down to baseline.
So in my patients who've had COVID-19 my goal is to wait seven weeks after they've gone through their process and then go forward with the operation at that point, of course, unless there's ongoing issues that require further attention.
