One way to assess for this would be an MRI of the lumbar spine and what you can see here is that you have scalloping of the vertebra and that's actually an expansion of the spinal fluid within the dural sac at the lumbar spine and a person who has maybe Marfan syndrome or also can be Loeys-Dietz syndrome. This increased volume of spinal fluid at the base of the spine can impact the efficacy and dosing of spinal anesthesia. This is one of the reasons why we recommend assessment with imaging in advance of pregnancy as well as consultation with an anesthesiologist before delivery.
