There are features that we notice in young children with Marfan syndrome.

The white part of the eye is something that we call the sclera and people with Loeys-Dietz syndrome often has a gray or blue appearance as you can appreciate in the young children on the top of this slide, especially in the young girl on the upper left.

There also can be abnormalities of the alignment of the eyes, often with one eye that looks outward while the other eye is looking straight forward.

This is a situation that we call exotropia and it's a very important feature to pay attention to, because during early childhood, if one eye sees less well than the other, the brain can simply learn to tune out information from the less good eye, and if that goes on long enough, it can become a permanent problem: the brain simply lacks the ability to process information from the less good eye, so this exotropia issue is something important to recognize early in life and to have treated by an ophthalmologist.
この所見は外斜視と呼ばれていますが、非常に重要な特徴で注意が必要です。なぜかというと、片方の眼の視力がもう片方よりも悪い場合、視力の悪い眼から送られる情報を脳が遮断するようになり、この状態が長く続くと、一生戻らなくなる可能性があるからです。つまり、脳が、視力の悪い眼から送られる情報を処理する能力を失ってしまうということです。ですから外斜視に関しては早期発見が重要で、眼科の治療を受ける必要があります。
The treatments can be very simple, simply by patching the good eye. You can force the brain to learn to process information through the less good eye. But again, it's something important for you and your pediatrician to recognize early in childhood so it can be treated.
外斜視の治療は視力がいい方の眼にふたをするなど、非常に単純に行われる場合もあります。これにより、強制的に脳が視力の悪い方の眼から入る情報を処理できるようにします。繰り返しになりますが、この所見に関しては、親御さんや小児科医が早期に発見し、治療につなげることが重要です。
