So what's involved in the process of correcting a cell outside of the body and then giving it back? Well, first up on the upper left you'll see a representation of a person for the purposes of this talk: this person has Marfan syndrome. You would take a cell from the body that could be a blood cell, it could be a skin cell, and there are methods that allow you to transform that cell into what's called a stem cell.

A stem cell is a really interesting and unique type of cell that has the ability to replicate itself over and over and over again and it also has the ability to turn into other cell types of the body. So it's a very useful cell type to have if you want to make a lot of those cells and ultimately, if you want to use those cells for a specific purpose, let's say, to fix the heart muscle or to fix a heart valve or to fix the aorta.
幹細胞は非常に興味深い、特別な種類の細胞です。何度も自己複製する能力をもち、体にある他の細胞種に変化することができます。大量に作りたい場合や、究極的には、心筋や心臓弁、大動脈の修復といった特定の目的に必要となる場合には、幹細胞は非常に有益な細胞種です。
Once the cell has been corrected through a variety of techniques, there are ways, there are now methods to cause that stem cell to turn into the cell type that you want it to become. Here we have a representation of a blood cell or a muscle cell or a nerve cell and then those cells are put back into the body once they've been corrected with the hope that they will improve the condition.
