Q:
I know you talked about the different types of valves what's the lifespan of the different valve type, what lasts the longest and what would you select?

A:
So mechanical valves last the longest. I've seen a couple that are 30 or 40 or 30 or 40 years old when I've had to kind of go back and reoperate on an aneurysm or something like that and they still look pristine, so, you know, those parts don't wear out but you can still have problems with them. A lot of times related to the blood thinners that are required so you can have bleeding or clotting problems but also you can have problems with what I call the patient prosthesis interface. So even though the parts don't wear out they get sewn into a human being and so you can get some scar tissue that can grow around it and compromise the way the valve works kind of like, like kind of gums up the valve a little bit.

The other option are biologic valves. Biologic valves are manufactured either from the tissue around a cow's heart or a pig and it's really the way I think it runs more like a really fancy piece of leather, so a, you know, really fancy tanned piece of leather can last a long time but if it's being used every day eventually it's going to wear out so those valves typically last somewhere between 10 and 20 years. 15 is the average.

The living valve options are a Ross procedure again not usually a great option for some of the root aneurysms or connective tissue disorder but good for kids and that's where you take a pulmonic valve and move it from the right side of the heart to the left so it's a living valve.

And then there's a couple other procedures something called an Ozaki procedure but we don't really have really long term date on that but it's still a piece of pericardium that's treated with chemicals so, you know, it may be similar to a biologic valve. We'll see.
